Congratulations on your new arrival! Thank you for allowing me the pleasure of photographing your new baby. I am excited and honoured to share these special moments with you and your family.
This guide will help you prepare for your upcoming newborn session.
If mom is nursing, avoid anything spicy or acidic such as pizza, hot sauce, tomatoes etc as these foods can cause discomfort in your baby and a baby with an upset tummy does not pose well for photographs! Some other foods that may cause gas are; dairy products, caffeine, soy, wheat, eggs, citrus fruit, etc.
Stimulate baby for a short time prior to your session. Keeping them awake prior will help us with getting them into a nice deep sleep for their session. This would be a great time to bathe and/or moisturize baby and/or give them naked time! If your baby tends to have dry skin, please do moisturize!
Please pack bottles with breastmilk or formula and a pacifier! Babies need to be soothed often during the session and it is best if I am able to settle baby. Once baby smells mom, they often have a difficult time settling back down for posed shots.
Please try to feed baby immediately prior to leaving for your session. This way, baby should be in a deep sleep with a full tummy so that we can get started as soon as you arrive in studio.
Please remove any bandages (from foot pricks or shots) from baby at least 1 hour before your session.
Bring baby in loose clothing. A simple sleeper works best. Please do not bring them in a onesie or anything that needs to be removed over the head. No socks or mitts as they leave lines in your babyʼs soft skin. Try to keep the diaper a wee bit loose too, if possible, to eliminate diaper lines.
I keep extra receiving blankets on hand, but please do bring some of your own as well as spare wipes and diapers!
Please note, if you plan to have your baby boy circumcised, schedule your session for before the procedure or a minimum of 5 days after the procedure.
Mom & Dad:
If you are unsure of what to wear, basic slim-fitting t-shirts or tank tops are always a safe choice! Please bring a light option such as cream or white as well as a darker option such as black. Dad can wear jeans. Dad may choose to remove his shirt for more artistic looking portraits. Mom should wear something comfortable and stretchy such as leggings if she prefers. Avoid logos or patterns if possible.
Mom can apply heavier than usual makeup (it will show up lighter in camera) if she desires! Please try to avoid chipped nail polish.
Dad should trim his beard or facial hair, clean hair and clean fingernails.
Clean! Clean hair, clean feet, freshly brushed teeth and wipe snotty noses. We want your littles looking their best. Avoid colourful candy or drinks before your session.
For girls - Please dress them in light neutral colours. Donʼt be afraid of mixing textures such as lace! Try to avoid too much pattern, however.
For boys - Jeans and a solid white t-shirt works well, or shirtless.
If your child still naps, please have them nap before your session so that they are calm and relaxed during the session. We will generally photograph siblings near the beginning of the session, or when mom and dad feel that they are ready and willing to participate! We do have a play space for them so they should not be bored during the duration of the session but feel free to have another family member pick up your children if you feel that they might need to get out for some air.
